Women, Girls & Community Empowerment Program

Hope of Children and Women Victims of Violence (HOCW)

The Women, Girls & Community Empowerment Program is a cross-cutting initiative that strengthens confidence, protection, health awareness, and social inclusion for women, girls, men, and boys within HOCW-supported communities. The program complements HOCW’s livelihoods, childcare, and health interventions by addressing the social and cultural dimensions of empowerment.

Netball Team for Women’s Empowerment

A key component of the program is the HOCW Women’s Netball Team, which has become an important platform for confidence-building, leadership, and gender empowerment.

Key features

  • Regular trainings three times per week

  • Friendly and competitive matches at least once every two weeks

  • Participation in District Netball Tournaments, held quarterly

Beyond physical fitness, netball is used as a safe entry point for dialogue and learning. Trainers intentionally integrate discussions on:

  • Women’s rights and gender equality

  • Sexual and reproductive health

  • Self-esteem, teamwork, and leadership

Through sport, women are supported to challenge gender norms and build the belief that they can succeed regardless of sex or background.

Creative Arts, Dance & Drama for Awareness

Dance, drama, and performance are used as powerful tools for community education and engagement, particularly for:

  • Gender equality and non-violence

  • Sexual and reproductive health awareness

  • Social cohesion between refugee and host communities

These activities provide safe spaces for expression, learning, and dialogue, especially for youth, men, and boys.

Drop Child Care Program: Enabling Women’s Participation

The Drop Child Care Program is a critical enabling component of HOCW’s Two-Generation approach. By providing safe, supervised childcare, the program allows women to:

  • Continue education and skills training

  • Participate in livelihoods and empowerment activities

  • Engage in sports, leadership, and community programs

  • Focus on personal recovery and growth without concern for their children’s safety

This ensures that women are not forced to choose between caregiving and self-development.

Together, these interventions:

  • Strengthen women’s confidence, leadership, and agency

  • Improve sexual and reproductive health knowledge

  • Reduce social isolation and stress

  • Support child safety and wellbeing through integrated childcare

  • Engage men and boys as allies in gender equality

Empowerment activities are therefore not stand-alone, but part of a holistic system that links protection, health, livelihoods, and caregiving.
